Synopsis
IN the assessment of a structure, information of the geometry and material of the structure should be available and the structural responses to external excitation should be recorded. All these information are input into an algorithm for the analysis. However, information of the structure may be plenty in the case of a larger structure, and the connections with the supports may not be accurately modeled. This leads to poor accuracy and sometimes not possible to evaluate the structure with existing algorithms.
The lecture will address this problem with a new technique of assessment by dividing a large structure into different substructures. A target substructure that contains some significant components for the evaluation is selected while the presence of other substructures is represented by the interface forces at the boundary (connection) with adjacent substructures. The algorithm adopted for the evaluation is based on dynamic responses (acceleration) measured from the substructure under excitation of the whole structure, and the interface force between the target substructure and its adjacent substructures are reconstructed. The accuracy of this new method is judged from the accuracy of the reconstructed interface forces and the final condition assessment results. This new technique is illustrated with two types of excitations on a bridge deck: (a) seismic excitations at the supports and (b) excitation from a moving vehicle on top of the bridge deck.
